I had a frustrating morning yesterday. Somehow I managed to lock my keyboard app and after many hours of troubleshooting, and calling my provider, I had no choice but to reset my phone.

Resetting Sucks!!!

Because basically you loose all your contacts, photos, and work. If you haven’t backed up your stuff….poof! Prepare to watch the disappearing act!

I keep having these little technical difficulties and it just makes me irritable because I already have all these other little nuisances in my life.

For example, having to blog from my smartphone since my laptop died. And considering, I’m already a blind old bat, this is VERY IRKSOME!

Also, trying to blog and write past midnight when my two toddlers are asleep. Bring on the caffeinated beverages!

My “writing hours” are supposed to be from midnight until 3 a.m. Since that’s mostly the only uninterrupted time I can usually find.

These are my little monsters in the picture below. Don’t let their cuteness factor fool you. They’re gremlins I tell you! Boy do they wreak some havoc on the daily!

And when my baby does NOT want to go to sleep, he insists on sitting on my lap. Even though he sees me trying to write with my one free hand. But let me tell you…..he does NOT care.

So….yes, I get extremely stressed out. Being a full time mommy, while trying not to lose my own identity is difficult.

I feel like that woman in the boxing movie I reviewed last week. I just want to give up sometimes because it’s too hard. I’m exhausted. And my kids know me as mom, NOT AS DEANNA OR CANDID CHICANA.

I asked my three year old son “What’s mommies name?” and he said, “mommy.” ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I asked the same question several times, but unfortunately I’m just mommy. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

But someway somehow I have to make it work. I get up and try again each day. In between boiling the beans and peeling potatoes and seasoning the meat, I also have to pay attention to my babies, AND not forget who I am as well.

But like Pastor Craig says in the video, it’s ok to sometimes be going through a season that seems unbalanced and maybe chaotic. This too shall pass! In fact it will pass very rapidly, and the day will come when I wish they could be little again.

I am thankful for my daughter’s, my “little queens,” I call them. They are my damage control team. They are growing up to be very independent and I don’t always tell them how much I appreciate them, but I try to as often as I can.

Without their help, I wouldn’t even be able to poop ๐Ÿ’ฉ by myself. My monsters are magnetically attached at my hips and 80% of the time they will scream bloody murder if I don’t let them come into the restroom with me. By the way….why do you think it’s called RESTroom? I clearly don’t get any rest in there.๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

So thank you, to you my beautiful little queens. Mami โค’s You! Without you, I wouldn’t accomplish anything. And I am so thankful God made you mine.๐Ÿ’‹

I’m currently working on updating two of my blogs and I have a new story brewing. Also, I fell behind on my inkchallenge. I’ll try to catch up tonight.

I’ve also downloaded the kindle reader app once again to start reading more. I got 10 free books for signing up . So I’ll post a pic of what I’ll be reading for awhile. It may take me awhile to read them. I remember I used to be able to read an entire book in one day. Those days are long gone now.

Oh yeah, don’t forget to work on your writing prompt for the week to be entered in Candid Chicana’s very first writing contest. This week’s prompt is:

A Mexican Girls Memoir

Standard

Tonight I found some of my high school work from my journalism class. They were small articles I wrote that were published in the Bulldog Barker section of the Plainview Daily Herald. Either from the year 1999 or 2000.

I still remember thinking how I always got stuck with all the boring assignments. I was so shy in high school too. I think I still am. Shy, or socially awkward. Either way, I am still my same weird, little loner self.

Interviewing people in the community was the most challenging part of journalism class for me. I’m pretty grateful for the birth of the digital age, and social media. I’m free to write about anything that interests me.

Thankfully, my blog isn’t restricted by anything or anyone. A myriad of topics are out there, waiting for me to discover them and breathe life into them.๐Ÿค“

And praise God, for the revolutionary, information technology age, the internet๐Ÿ“ถ, Steve Jobs (๐ŸŽApple๐Ÿ), and online colleges๐ŸŽ“.

The skills I developed for researching and finding credible sources comes directly from that education. So thank you God, I’m happy to be a part of this era.

It makes me a little sad though. My little article clippings. They’re reminders that I haven’t achieved my goals yet. And I feel a little disappointed in myself. And now that I’m starting to get my feet wet again, I feel a sudden fear. Fear of the unknown, and lack of clear direction.

The thing that helps me stay positive right now is you guys and gals, the readers who keep reading my blogs. As well as other bloggers whom I’ve become acquainted with along the way on my blogging journey .

Selena Gomez’s song, ๐ŸŽต I Love You Like A Love Song ๐ŸŽต adequately describes how I’m feeling.

“Every beautiful thought’s been already sung… ”

-Selena Gomez

I Love You Like A Love Song

Except for me, it’s: “every beautiful thoughts been already written.” What can I write about that hasn’t already been written before? So, I guess there’s no need to try to reinvent the wheel as they say. Just so long as I write.

I’m a little discouraged with my life detours. But I’m not giving up yet! I created a little inspirational flipgram video of a few of my favorite quotes. Maybe it will encourage someone today. Let me know if you like it. Send me your favorite quotes and I’ll share them on my Candid Chicana platform.

Hocus Pocus, Focus Focus

Standard

I popped on to my LinkedIn account this morning and came across a great article called:

The Power of One Focused Hour a Day by, Rao Srinivas.

When you are a creative, you can become overwhelmed at times with multiple projects going on (At least I do.) And also being thirsty for knowledge in the digital age can be as addicting as hardcore drugs. Metaphorically speaking. Let me explain what I mean.

If you love reading and learning, you may easily get distracted with the chitter chatter of content available online, with so many social media platforms. For example, I myself am a lover of sayings, quotes, poems, articles, blogs, free e-books, free homeschool worksheets that many resourceful and savvy mamas create, and so much more. So that can easily snatch up most of my day. Perhaps for you it’s YouTube, CandyCrush, or Pinterest.

I told my dear friend, (fellow blogger) Ralph Nyadzi, from Cegast Academy about my conundrum. It’s all the wonderful content that others are C R E A T I N G that inspires me. It’s like I don’t want to miss something great. He reminded me that it’s my quest for knowledge that makes me devour the words on people’s creations.

The problem with that, is that I’m hindering my own creations. So I was very happy to stumble across this article on LinkedIn. And as always, I have to quote a piece of his work. Because that’s what I do! That’s the type of writer I am. I love other writers words WAAAAAYYY more than my own. ๐Ÿ˜‚

One FOCUSED hour a day is the equivalent of having two full weeks to work on whatever it is you want. In one FOCUSED hour a day you could write a book, build a company, learn an instrument, and so much more. What would add more value to your life? One FOCUSED hour a day of M E A N I N G F U L work, or countless hours pissed away on Facebook and Twitter comparing your insides to everyone’s outsides?

The good news for me is that I spend at least an hour a day on one of my projects already. The bad news is, I still piss away countless hours on social media obsessed with other people’s work. Liking pages, quotes and memes. I go cook dinner, come back and log back in to do the same crap. Welp! Yes, getting inspired, but yet neglicting my own work.

Whether it’s fear, procrastanation, or pure addiction, or the sum of those collectively, I’m not really sure. But the article had some great tips, that I will be utilizing to help me square things away. So, if you want to read the article I will include the link at the bottom. Now, I have to logg off my blog and go do some of my other work. (I mean after I check Facebook just real quick!)๐Ÿ˜‹ Hey give me a break, it’s day one and you know what they say, “Old habbits die hard!”

To read his article, click the link below. And also, because my friend Ralph is amazing with words, I’ve shared a link to his blog as well where you can read 12 Success Quotes For Achievers.

Help People, Never Hurt People

Standard

What we Are is God’s gift to us.

What we Become is our Gift to God.

-Dr. Robert Anthony

I remember my pastor preached in one of his sermons, that you are most like, the five people you hang out with. So think about the five most frequent people you spend your time with.

Are they positive, encouraging, and uplifiting people? Or are they negative, discouraging, and belittling people?

Everyday we all have the same 24 hours yes, but none of us know what each others battles are. Remember that there may be people in your circle that look up to you and admire you. So don’t ridicule their progress (however minimal it may be in your eyes).

That woman at Wal-mart that your friends just mocked, might be fighting cancer as we know it. You know…..how these analogies go. Don’t do that! Don’t shame people. Don’t mock them or make fun of their misfortune. Don’t social media shame them. It’s not right.

I have a personal little mantra I created for myself to help me remember to always be sweet. I have bad days just like everyone else. My mantra is:

Help people, Never Hurt People

-Deanna Montalvo

That came about because of our church mission: To be a hospital for a hurting humanity.

Be wise and associate with people who are leaders. Leaders know how, and when to give constructive criticism. But steer clear of peers and coworkers that only want to play sadistic pyschological games with you.

An example of that would be if your boss asked you to do something a specific way, and later reprimanded you for doing it (the way they told you to do it.)

Stay away from those that are vengeful or vindictive. People who spread false information about you or try to influence others opinion about you.

I’m very much a loner because of my distrust for people. I’ve been betrayed by so many people in my life, that I struggle to let people in. All I can do, is my very best. So that I can positively influence the people I love and care about.

Remember, if your supervisors at work are not positive mentors, maybe they have never had one. Set the example. Because we all can learn from one another. It doesn’t matter where you are in the organization as far as position goes. Just adopt this as a lifestyle habbit. Be inspirational and influential.

What works for you may not work for someone else. So what makes you think your way is much better?

A True Story About Failure and Quitting

Standard

It’s always too soon to quit.

– Dr. Robert Anthony

I’ve mentioned before in some of my previous blogs that I’ve failed a lot in my life. But failing doesn’t always equal quitting.

Everyone knows that it takes failing over and over sometimes, if you really want to perservere.

When I was in the military there was a time when I couldn’t do my “run” (qualifications) in my alloted time. So, they ordered me to attend (Mando PT) mandatory physical training. It sucks because you have to be up at like 4:30 a.m. to excercise every day. I DO NOT MISS THAT!

Anyway. I trained, and trained, and trained religiously, until the day of the re-take PT Quals.

So all of us mando pt, men and women showed up at the gym the day of the re-take PT quals. And I remember the trainors telling us,

“No matter what, don’t stop running until you do all of your laps.”

There was probably about a dozen of us there. So, they started the time on the stop watch, and we all began running our laps.

Immediatly, the few fast runners, were laps ahead of the rest of us slow runners. Some of the ones who did finish their laps in time, ended up vomitting afterwards.

The trainors continued urging the rest of us to finish our laps. But as people started missing their target time, they were just giving up.

Despite that, the trainors kept on shouting from the sidelines,

“Don’t stop! Keep running!,”as a last effort to convince us to finish our laps.

I saw each and every one of the slow runners just throw there hands up in defeat, and walk off the track. I don’t blame them really, they had already failed.

So, now…..it’s just me, Deanna running (chest burning, dying every step of the way). And I was feeling like a dumb @$$. Because everyone that has failed up to this point, has left the track. And my slow @$$ is still running.

I’m hearing the trainors shouting,

“Don’t quit! Just keep going! Finish!”

All the while I’m thinking:

“I’m the only idiot still running, knowing I’ve failed. I’ve missed my mark. I’ve gone way over on my time. And I look stupid!”

But nonetheless, I just could’nt quit. I had already failed the quals. But all that was left, was for me to finish what I had started.

So I ran. It felt unmercifully endless. And I imagine the sight of me was painfully pitiful.

But alas, my tortorous plight had come to its conclusion. Even though I felt like I had to vomit afterwards, I didn’t.

The trainors commended me for not quitting, and for finishing my laps. While I failed to meet the quals, I could at least be proud that I didn’t give up.

This was a similiar experience to our “battlestations training” in bootcamp, where it does not benefit you to give up, and to just quit. I can not stress enough, no matter what you look like and feel like while your doing it, just keep going!

So what if you look like a hot mess! As long as you get it done. Maybe the test isnt, can you finish this race in (insert minutes / amt of time)? Perhaps the real question is, Do you have what it takes to keep running, to FINISH your race?

We can’t win every race we embark on. But we can choose whether or not we cross the FINISH line.

What you get by reaching your destination is not as important as what you become by reaching your destination.

-Dr. Robert Anthony

Discerning The Direction Of Your Dreams

Standard

Sometimes I wonder why God gives me these Herculean dreams. I can be thinking that I have it all figured out, and then suddenly God gives me more.

That’s not a complaint really, I’m thankful HE trusts me so much, to assign these special jobs to me. But I am just sitting here talking to God, and maniacally ruminating over every idea and project.

Thinking,

Dear Lord, can I handle all of this? God I have the first documentary to work on… now you bless me with this one. But you’re right LORD, this project is immensly more meaningful, powerful, and massively needed in the Mexican community. God what about my childrens book series? I should be doing that as my PRIORITY. After all, that is my very first project idea. Not to mention my illustrator is patiently waiting on me to finish this. GET IT TOGETHER DEANNA! I tell myself. Tick-tock, tick-tock! Time is of the essence D! Where will I get the resources and finances to fund this? How? How? How? Please tell me now LORD! Yikes! This could take years. Where do I even find the equipment? What about that project I wanted to help my daughter with? They will be grown and gone before I know it. (Big sigh). What about my creative business idea? Can I incorporate that in too, into my schedule and into my life? I have to! It’s mandatory not optional. What if I never finish, or I die? That’s like a permanent, irreversible, INCOMPLETE on my entire life. God please let me accomplish all these wonderful ideas you have put on my mind! It scares me to think what if my dreams don’t come true? What if my time runs out?Etc. Etc.

That would be the greatest tragedy of my life. Those are the things I obsess over daily.

Mix together my maniacal thoughts, with a dash of fear, a half cup of doubt and cup of procrastination. Guess what you get?

You get a lone loba writer, stranded on the deserted island, of the Prisoner Of Words. Cautiously, waiting for the spirits to guide me in the right direction. Waiting to be free to run into the wild once again, to regain my clarity and my vision.

I don’t have all the answers. Most days, I can see the vision clearly, and other days I don’t have the focus. But the appetite, the hunger is never entirely satisfied. Just when I think I’m full, I get hungry for more.

My brain tries to put all the pieces of the puzzle together quickly and painlessly. I try to be strategic in my plans and organization. In the end I know I can do more, and I have to do more. Most importantly I must conquer the fear.

My ideas are as colorful and infinite as Charlie’s Evergobstopper, in Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. They don’t dull or diminish.” They keep coming. To this I marvel at my God!

I found some apps this weekend to help me keep track of my writing productivity and projects. I am excited that I’m on a new journey. One I’ve never been on before. One that scares the bleep outta me.

But I feel my spirit leading me. It’s difficult for this lone loba to go to uncharted territory and pave a path. But I must confess that when a dream placed on you brings you to tears, and you feel it inside all of your soul, you follow it.

This is what I am being led to do. Hold nothing back. It’s better to try and fail than to always wonder what if. And it’s EVEN BETTER to make your magic in the world.

Leave your mark. Trust your instincts! They will lead you if you listen!

God Bless. I pray that God is giving you direction in your own creative dreams and goals. And that you can listen to the spirit guiding you.

You love what you find time to do.

Intellectual Property, Why You Should Create and Conceal

Standard

Once you accept an idea it’s an idea whose time has come

-Dr.Robert Anthony

Last Monday I was working on my Bible devotional: Listening For The Voice Of God- Growing in Faith Every Day. It’s a Women of Faith study guide series about discernment. I was initially inspired by the depiction that, “God was the Master Designer and Artist”. And that, “The first chapter of Genesis tells the story of creation. One of the greatest wonders of the story of creation is that God created with mere words.” And “With syllables, God spoke and creation happened.”

Is that not remarkable? How God created things into existence with HIS voice and HIS words! Ok I know some of you are rolling your eyes. My atheist friends, especially you! But you’re my friends, so you love me and support my craft. ๐Ÿ˜—

The creation story is really inspirational to me because I see myself as a very creative person with endless ideas. I aspire to create written works and perhaps one day become a published author in the children’s literature genre. I also have many other ideas and creations on my mind. Such as a documentary I want to produce. And a few other project ideas. But I like to keep those ideas top secret. ๐Ÿค‘ They aren’t ready to be shared.

Are you a creator too? Perhaps you may find the following information helpful.

Last year, I became interested in researching copyright and trademark laws. Especially because I was about to start my blog and other writing projects . I figured I better read up on some stuff concerning intellectual property.

Honestly, copyright was easier to grasp. Patents and trademarks, were a little more tricky and elaborate for me.

So lets talk about what exactly is intellectual property? And why should you know about IP rights?

Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind: inventions; literary and artistic works; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.

IP is divided into two categories:

  1. Industrial Property includes;patents for inventions, trademarks, industrial designs, and, geographical indications.
  2. Copyright Covers literary works (such as novels, poems and plays), films, music, artistic works (e.g. drawings, paintings, photographs, and sculptures) and architectural design.

Rights related to copyright include those of performing artists in their performances, producers of phonograms in their recordings, and broadcasting in their radio and television programs.[wipo.int]

If you are interested in educating yourself in greater depths with patent and trademark laws, allow me to direct you to the website for more substantial and thorough information about IP where you can learn: (check below article for links in reference page.)

  • What is Intellectual Property(IP)?
  • Understanding Copyright and Related Rights / Understanding Industrial Property
  • WIPO Intellectual Property Handbook- A comprehensive guide to the policy, law and use of IP.

The most important thing to remember is that, your “ideas” are NOT protected!

The law specifically states in:

Section 102(b) of the Copyright Act:

IN NO CASE does copyright protection for an original work of authorship extend to any idea, procedure, process, system, method of operation, concept, principle or discovery regardless of the form in which it is described, explained, illustrated, or embodied in such work.(Klems, A. Brian)

Basically in layman’s terms, ideas can only be protected once they have been written, and or created in a tangible form . This is important because this literally means that you must safeguard your ideas. No one needs to know the juicy details until you have created it. Keep your mouth shut with your ideas. Protect them during construction stages. Conceal at all costs!

There have been instances where various persons have inquired about my ideas. I usually give them a limited amount of information about my works, basically a vague and general idea. I smile and tell them I can’t go into detail, because it’s my intellectual property. Perhaps they judge me, but hey, I’m overprotective about my ideas. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

USlegal.com, emphasizes that, “Above all, Intellectual Property (IP) can only work for you if you understand what it is, why you want it, and what you are going to do with it.”

They have given us 10 rules to use as a guide. (Subject to revisions as changes become evident in future years.)

Here they are:

  1. Get professional help
  2. Know your (Intellectual Property) Rights
  3. Think about why you want IP (i.e., What you will actually do with it)
  4. If you don’t protect the IP your innovation is less likely to happen
  5. What’s in a name?
  6. Be realistic about what you can, and cannot, protect
  7. It’s big business & controversial
  8. Keep your idea secret until you have filed a patent application
  9. Trade secrets
  10. Make sure the IP is owned in a way that allows development

Note these basic terms with definitions;

Copyright: A copyright gives the owner the exclusive right to reproduce, distribute, perform, display, or license his work.

Patent: A patent is the right to exclude others from making, using or selling the invention throughout the United States of America (A limited monopoly granted by the government for the term period of the patent. After the patent expires, anyone may make, use or sell the invention.”

Trademark: Include words, names; symbols, and logos. The intent of trademark law is to prevent consumer confusion about the origin of a product. (USlegal.com)

Ok, all of that probably sounds confusing, and or boring, but if you are still reading, thank YOU! You, as creators, will benefit from this critical information. Even just knowing the basic terms and definitions will greatly benefit you in your artistic endeavors.

One article I came across basically reiterated and enhanced what I learned in my devotional last week. That we are creators because we are a product of the ultimate CRE-A-TOR! The “Master Designer/Artist,” Who is God!

In particular, this article had a section that was geared specifically towards writers & authors. So it caught my attention. This article greatly described what my Bible devotional had touched on, but with a much greater emphasis. The article brilliantly illustrates the power of words. The inspiring way we use words to create, just like our creator.

Here is an excerpt from the article.

Of all three statutory intellectual property regimes, copyright may be most obviously structured around an origins myth, because original creation is the touchstone of copyright protection. The Copyright Act provides copyright protection for “original works of authorship fixed in any tangible expression. “…………An author of a copyrightable work has been laboriously described as having a “creative genius” and as being taken hold of by a “creative spark” Authors reap the “creative powers of their mind” using their “fancy or imagination,” and “intellect.”An author, although left undefined by the Copyright Act, straddles the domains of the human and divine. As a model of human ingenuity, the author “wr[ites] a ‘self” possessing the unique qualities of an individual, owning his words, and thus owning himself. He is nonetheless divinely inspired. The author as a concept began with the author as a vessel for independent, God-like forces. Indeed the metaphor of the author as divinely gifted is an active metaphor in copyright case law. Roberta Kwall has traced this parallel between authorship and God calling it a “mirroring argument,” comparing the first creation narrative in Genesis to wonders of artistic creation:”man’s capacity for artistic creation mirrors or imitates God’s creative capacity.”(Silbey,Jessica M.)

Our human minds are capable of creating fascinating works. Just look at how creations and inventions influence society. Creativity and ingenuity aided astronauts to reach the moon.

The digital and information age have also revolutionized the technology of our modern society. Which has also sparked a new generation of creators including the unrivaled social media innovators .

Anyone and everyone can now create content. So be leery of too many folks knowing all the specific details of your ideas. And research the laws or at least consult with knowledgeable experts.
