My Mother’s Eyes

Standard

People always say I look like my mother. I don’t always “see” it. But when I looked at this SELFIE that I took the other day, I had to stop, and look again. I was like, WHOAH, I LOOK LIKE MY MAMA!

I’m not one of the lucky people who can take one SELFIE and upload it to Instagram with the # Hottie. I have to take like twenty, and PRAY that one is decent enough to post. I usually have to delete all twenty. #UGLY PEOPLE PROBLEMS

And thank God for Snapchat, and filters! That’s the only way us ugly folk can get model industry looking photos. 👻

The next time someone tells me I look like my mommy I’ll just say, “You ain’t lying.”😂😂😂 I know my momma is beautiful, so…maybe I’m not so bad looking afterall.

What do you guys think? Do you think I have my mommas eyes?

Candid Chicana’s Naughty Girl Bucket List

Standard

This is my NAUGHTY GIRL BUCKET LIST for 2017 & 2018. I’m making it a “thing”.

I’ve always been perhaps too modest and prudish when it comes to fashion. But I’m about to be 36 in February, and I do not feel like a beautiful, and desirable woman. In fact, I can’t really remember the last time I did feel beautiful and desirable. But I have to fix this. Because I’m alive.

No more feeling sorry for myself. It’s time to take some action. No more idleness and complacency when it comes to self-love.

I mean even William Shakespeare said;

Self-love is not so vile a sin as self-neglect.”

So, here’s my plan. Since I’m turning 36 soon, this is going to be my very first,

#SELF-LOVE-CHALLENGE#.

And my SELF-LOVE NUMBER #IS (36)

So, I am going to come up with 36 NAUGHTY GIRL things to put on my bucket list. The goal is to do as many as possible before I reach 37.

Any woman feeling like they need to participate in the #SELF-LOVE-CHALLENGE, is welcome to do this to. Whatever age you will be turning, is the #OF SELF-LOVE Bucket List Goals you should come up with. The older the better, because that means more self love.

She Has Daddy Issues. Her Daddy Being Dead Is The Issue.

Standard

I came across a new bloggers work, (Abirami P. Kurukkal) I’ve never read before. Her post really pulled on my heartstrings. She bloggs about grief and the loss of her father. It was so beautiful I got choked up reading a few of her blog posts.

Many of my viewer’s know that I can’t shut up about my own papi(dad), and that I loved him dearly. But it’s so beautiful to read the words of another daughter, another griever, another vulnerable soul. I just have to share her blog post here on Candid Chicana .

Click on the link to check out one of the posts that I really loved, and read an exerpt from her article, and look around at some of her other stuff. I’ll definitely be checking back and following her blog.

When did you know you wanted to be a Writer?

Standard

I was in eighth grade, and 14 years old, when I first dreamed of being a “WRITER.“I think it was all the R.L. Stine, Fearstreet books that I became obsessed with, that inspired me to aspire to be a writer.

I am totally posing for this picture above. I don’t even remember who took this picture of me. But this is what I looked like when I first began dreaming of becoming a writer.

Before this age I did love to mostly read. I did write stories, but I never thought about becoming a writer then.

I have always enjoyed journaling and I have always kept dozens of journal’s and spirals for writing. I actually have some journals I wrote in my childhood saved somewhere.

And just in general I’m a school supplies hoarder.😂😂😂 I always have an assortment of pretty pens, paper, journal’s, and spirals stocked away. ALWAYS!

My poor parents though!

They hated all the very things that made me Deanna. The things that made me me!

For example, me reading books all day, that was a no-no! My mother would yell at me to do chores, instead of having a book in my hands all day.

I did do chores, but I suspect my parents grew irritated with seeing me glued to my books a large portion of the day. Strangely enough, now I’m glued to my Samsung Android phone, blogging my average little life away. And I love it!

The thing my parents probably hated the most, was all the mess I made with papers, scissors, and scrapbooking photographs. They loathed it! They said I was damaging and ruining good pictures. You know because I had to use those crafty scissors that create pretty designs of jagged and zigzag edges.

I think it’s because we were dirt poor, and well it was an efficiency that we grew up in. I’m sure my mami didn’t appreciate me making my “creative” messes in such a limited space.

My parents always gave me a guilt trip over it. But that was just me tapping into my creative mind at a young age. Just think if they had supported me in those endeavors, I might have become a famous artist like Frida Kahlo. 🎨🖼

I am thankful for my blogging platform that has helped me begin to practice my writing craft again. I never thought I would have time to do this. Starting, was the hard part. Now I love it!

The goal now, is to finish some of my projects and start collecting some royalties. Because this is hard work and I need to narrow in on accomplishing more specific goals. Mama needs remuneration!

As an adult blogger, I have developed a love of collecting quote books filled with quotes/sayings and also various dictionaries. I own so many, and I just love them! They are currently my favorite writing tools.

At what age, or when did you know you wanted to be a writer? Or…any other career? Did you realize your dream? Let me know at Candid Chicana . Send me pictures of you enjoying the fruits of your dream job. I can’t wait to see all the exciting careers you all have.😁

5 Things I Learned My 1st Year Blogging

Standard

November 20th will mark my 1 year anniversary of blogging @Candid Chicana.

It has been a struggle trying to figure everything out. I didn’t understand the blogging world in the beginning. I’m not particularly a technology savvy person either.

I taught myself to blog by; trial and error, by going outside of my comfort zone, and utilizing social media to mingle with other bloggers.

Making friends in the blogging community has been a great way to get some support, feedback, and make new friendships.

There’s so much that has been a learning experience too. Here’s a list of things I’ve struggled with and learned during my first year of blogging:

  1. Setting up the blog website: I taught myself how to set up my blog.
  2. How to write a blog post: I learned to produce blog posts by trial and error. Working on them until I learned how to navigate my platform.
  3. Creating content while balancing time: Instantly, I started creating content. It’s fun, yet hard work. Because I still have “life” stuff going on, so I need to properly balance my time. I must learn to motivate myself. As much as I want to sit at home and write ALL day and create all day, I have other responsibilities.
  4. Organize my content with a schedule: It’s time consuming. Again, I would LOVE to just write, write, and write all day & night, but that’s just not practical. At least not right now. A blog post can take me 2 to 4+hours to write. I’m currently looking for part time work. So, I know this will affect how much time I will be able to devote to blogging. 😔
  5. Writing despite my fears: I have so much more to say, but sometimes FEAR steals my courage. Fear of my writing not being acceptable, fear of the harsh critics, fear of failure, fear of embarrassing myself, fear of letting others down, fear of offending someone, fear of unintentionally hurting others in my journey, and most of all, the fear of NOT WRITING!

I actually really do enjoy blogging/ writing, and creating. My constant struggle is deciding what topics I should write about?

I will be working on a calendar of content creation for this upcoming new year, otherwise I just don’t know how I’ll fit blogging into my schedule.

When I worked full time at the thrift store this past year, I didn’t have energy and time to blog after work. So, I don’t want to lose my momentum that I’ve slowly built up, by screeching it to an abrupt halt.

For those of you out there considering starting a blog, it is a lot of work. You have to really love writing, or really love your subject to keep it up in the long haul. But it’s also a creative outlet! So, if you have that innate feeling that you should start a blog, GO FOR IT!

I hope this post has helped you decide if you want to start your own blog. Hopefully something I have said will encourage you to give it a go. Follow my blog, I will follow back.

Mi Familia’s Day of the Dead Altar

Standard

“No one is dead as long as he is remembered.”

I promised my readers and viewer’s that I would share with you how my family’s Day of the Dead altar turned out. So here it is.

Candid Chicana

Our little altar turned out beautiful and special to us. My mom and both of my sister’s helped me look through old photographs to place on the altar.

Nov 1st is the remembrance celebration for all the babies and children who have died, and Nov 2nd is the remembrance day of the adults we loved who also had to leave us too soon.

It is believed that as long as we keep on remembering our loved ones after their death, they will NOT be forgotten. Thus they live on in spirit.

It’s important for Mexicans, Chicanos, and many others to have this celebration of their loved ones, to celebrate the life their loved one’s lived, their remebrance after death and, the praying and celebrating of their after life. Because forgetting our loved ones, is the only way they would truly “die”.

We didn’t have the three tiers this year. I didn’t have boxes or crates to create the tiers. Now that we have a better idea of how it’s supposed to be, maybe next year we can do the three tiers.

Below is a basic description of what the three tiers are supposed to consist of.

Traditional Day of The Dead altars:

  • TIER ONE: Religious Items
  • TIER TWO: Photo of your deceased loved ones
  • TIER THREE: Skulls, Skeletons, Day of the Dead figurines and others of the like

Below is a video of what my family’s altars end result was. We found photos of my dad, both his parents, and some of his siblings (my abuelos/grandparents, tia/aunt, and tios/uncles, who all preceded my dad in death. We also found pictures of other friends and family that have gone on.

On our altar we put all of my dad’s favorite fruits, foods, candy, and sweets including pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) and his favorite drinks.

We put his favorite candy on the altar along with some of his favorite traditional Mexican candy.

Fruits that my papi loved; oranges, watermelon, and bananas were also placed there for him.

Main dishes my papi loved in life, like tamales, frijoles(beans), costillas (ribs)and more, were prepared for him. Along with papi’s favorite drinks; water, coffee, and Coca-Cola.

Here are the videos of what our altar looked like for Dia de los Muertos 2017:

My baby sister recorded it Live on Facebook. Click the link below to see how it turned out.

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1989759831313209&id=100008376331887

More quick videos and photographs below.

We also painted our faces just for fun.

The next day we redecorated papi’s grave with fall bouquets and flowers.

I hope you all learned some new things, I know that I have. My family learned along with me.

It was so nice to be there with my family during Dia de los Muertos this year.

Last year I created an altar here in Fort Worth,Texas, but it was not the same. It was a vastly different experience with my family and actually spending it with my papi too.

It is so ironic that the graveyard is such a peaceful and joyful place. It’s pleasant to sit and watch our children play with the toys we leave on papi’s grave.

And even though my brother couldn’t be there with us because he works out of town he was with us in heart and spirit. My brother left his ballcap on papi’s grave during one of his own prior visits to papi’s grave, so I felt like he was there with us too.

Thanks for letting me share my experience with you. And allowing me to talk about my papi, again!

He deserves to be remembered!
